NetMassDownloader not working: The underlying connection was closed:

Oct 2, 2008 at 3:19 PM
When I try and use NetMassDownloader I get the following error on every file.

Downloading Accessibility.pdb ...
The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive.

This is on Windows Vista Ultimate (x64) SP1 with Visual Studio Team System 2008 SP1
The command prompt is opened as Administrator and I have also tried it with the firewall disabled.

Anyone know what I need to do to fix this problem

Many Thanks
Neal

Hi...

I'm having the same problem.
I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 64(SP1), VS2008 Team System SP1 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, command prompt as Administrator or not.
I'm trying to run program using the source code to see any other information  about the error that could help...

Thanks. :)

It's good to know it's not an isolated issue.

I also downloaded and ran the source code to see if I could be any more info. I couldn't find any.

I ran the software on VMWare machine running XP SP3 with the same results.

Microsoft Source Server seems to be down, not NetMassdownloader related issue.

http://referencesource.microsoft.com/ cannot be reached.

Check the following forum thread, it is a known problem.

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3953994&SiteID=1

Even normal process doesn't work.

Interesting, though, because VS is able to download sources just fine. For example:$0$0$0$0http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/System.Drawing.pdb/69D0B4ED1ACE4C1EB1506723F7FF4CE11/System.Drawing.pd_$0$0$0$0$0I cleared my symbol cache when trying to test NetMassDownloader, so VS is downloading everything again when I first went to run a project again. It got 10MB of sources just fine.$0$0$0$0$0Perhaps the tool is being blocked somehow?$0

There seems to be a difference between the way VS and NetMassDownloader are getting the files. This is a URL used by VS to get a PDB successfully:

http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/System.Drawing.pdb/69D0B4ED1ACE4C1EB1506723F7FF4CE11/System.Drawing.pd_

Of course if you hit that in a browser it won't work, but VS gets it fine.

This is what NetMassDownloader is using:

http://referencesource.microsoft.com/symbols/sbscmp10.pdb/9EB57306FCE34FDB8E80CBF437B3F2BE1/sbscmp10.pdb

Completely different hosts.

This is the tool I'm using to see what URLs are being called: http://www.charlesproxy.com/

Hi,

The pdb's in msdl server's doesn't include the source file locations. They are the public symbol files,
you can therefore always change the reference server url from the config file.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<

configuration>

<

appSettings>

<

add key="ProcessInputDirRecursively" value="true" />

<

add key="CleanupTempCompressedSymbols" value="true" />

<

add key="UseReferenceSourceServer" value="true" />

<

add key="DownloadSymbols" value="true" />

<

add key="DownloadSourceCode" value="true" />

<

add key="SkipExistingSourceFiles" value="true" />

<

add key="DefaultSymbolServerUrl" value="http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/" />

<add key="ReferenceSourceServerUrl" value="http://referencesource.microsoft.com/symbols/" />

</

appSettings>

</

configuration>
